I have a relative who is a therapist. Could they be my therapist?

It seems like it would make sense for your relative to be your therapist, as they are likely very close to you, care deeply about your well-being and want to support you. Yet, it is not recommended for your family member or friend to act as your therapist, as it can present ethical and professional challenges.

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) which regulates the practice of psychotherapy in Ontario, Canada, stresses the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in the therapeutic relationship. This includes refraining from providing therapy to friends, family members, or colleagues unless there is no other option to provide therapy (e.g., people who seek therapy in remote towns and there are few psychotherapists available). In such instances, the therapist needs to have a clear plan to address potential conflicts of interest, maintain confidentiality, uphold ethical standards, and seek appropriate supervision.

Multiple relationships could lead to confusion for both the therapist and the client. For instance, the therapist or client may not know in which relationship certain information is being shared and whether it needs to remain confidential.

Licensed therapists are trained to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.s, and to facilitate personal growth and healing. They adhere to strict ethical guidelines and confidentiality standards to protect the well-being and privacy of their clients.

If you are seeking support for your mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, OCD, phobias, or addictions, it is recommended that you seek help from a qualified and licensed mental health professional, such as a psychotherapist or psychologist. These professionals can provide evidence-based therapy and support tailored to your specific needs and can help you navigate through challenges and achieve personal growth.

If you are unsure how to find a licensed therapist, you can consult with organizations such as CRPO or other regulatory bodies, mental health associations, or online directories to locate qualified mental health professionals in your area.

Prioritizing your mental health and well-being by seeking support from a licensed therapist can help you address your concerns effectively and work towards health and growth safely and ethically.
