Self-care: A therapist’s perspective

As a psychotherapist, I often encourage my clients to prioritize self-care. This concept is often misunderstood, with many people associating it with laziness or selfishness.

But the truth is, self-care is essential for our well-being.

What is self-care?

Kristen Neff, renowned self-compassion researcher states “self-care is any activity that helps preserve or restore your resources so that you can cope with life’s challenges and thrive. It’s about taking care of yourself so you can take care of others.” Moreover, Brené Brown states “self-care is not indulgence. It’s necessary for survival. It’s about giving yourself the same care you’d give someone you love.” It’s about taking the time to nurture your physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s recognizing that you can’t pour from an empty cup. When you care for yourself, you’re better equipped to handle life’s challenges and build stronger relationships.

Why is self-care important?

The benefits of self-care are numerous. It can:

*Reduce stress: Chronic stress can lead to various health problems. Self-practices, such as meditation or exercise, have been shown to reduce stress levels, lowering the risk of conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, and digestive issues.

*Enhanced immune function: Adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and stress reduction are essential for a robust immune system. Self-care practices can help bolster your body’s ability to fight off infections and diseases.

*Better sleep quality: Establishing a regular sleep routine, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a relaxing sleep environment are all self-care practices that can improve sleep quality.

*Improved mood: Activities like exercise, spending time in nature, and practicing mindfulness can boost your mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

*Enhanced relationships: When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re more likely to be patient, understanding and present in your relationships.

*Boost productivity: Self-care can help you feel more energized and focused, increasing productivity.

How to practice self-care:

Self-care looks different for everyone. It’s about finding activities that nourish your soul. Here are a few ideas:

*Physical self-care: Exercise, eat healthy, get enough sleep, and take care of your body.

*Emotional self-care: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or journaling, Spend time with loved ones.

*Mental self-care: Learn something new, read books, or engage in a hobby.

*Spiritual self-care: Connect with your values and beliefs. Spend time in nature pr practice gratitude.

Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s about honouring your needs and taking the time to recharge. By prioritizing self-care, you’re investing in your overall well-being and setting yourself up for a happier, healthier life.

With compassion,
