Exercise is not just good for your physical health, it can also have a positive impact on your mental health, particularly in managing symptoms of depression. When you engage in physical activity, your brain releases chemicals called endorphins, which are often referred to as “feel-good” neurotransmitters. These endorphins can help improve your mood and reduce feelings of sadness and anxiety.
In a meta-analysis published in JAMA, researchers found that exercise can be just as effective as medication in treating mild to moderate depression. The results came from 218 randomized trials that involved more than 14,100 participants. The clinical trials included individuals from various age groups with different degrees of symptoms. The researchers found that the more intense the workout was, the more effective it was at managing symptoms of depression. Yet, low-intensity workouts were also beneficial.
A literature review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that physical activity is highly beneficial for reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety and distress across a wide range of adult populations. These findings have been consistent across the general population, for individuals with diagnosed mental health disorders and individuals with chronic disease.
Exercise can also increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that helps protect and repair nerve cells in the brain. Low levels of BDNF have been linked to depression, and by increasing levels of this protein through exercise, individuals may experience improved mental health and cognitive function.
Whether you’re going for a jog, hitting the gym or simply going for a walk outside, incorporating regular exercise into your routine can have a positive impact on managing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Remember it is always important to consult with a mental health professional before making any changes to your treatment plan, but adding exercise to your routine could be a helpful tool in managing your mental health.
